All the same, they are great fun and we can all be thankful that we don't have to endure them today. It's not a coincidence that these two Cannonball Run movies came out in 1980 just as the ground was changing under Reagan and he was riding a wave of outrage over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The Reagan Administration and the media had branded all Communism as evil and the canard that it was still alive and well in the 1980's was still popular enough to make a movie. The movie industry and the media were more than happy to go along with it and write the story they wanted to believe and so the movie industry and media gave us all the Maradona, the Cabbage Patch Kid, The Empire Strikes Back, and so on, that we were all supposed to be watching. That's why this movie is so important. It was one of the first movies to show Americans how the Reagan Administration was going to save them from the threat of Communism. This wasn't 1950's Hollywood anymore. This was the real world and the administration and the media was going to save us from the Russians. It's hard to believe, but it's true that the Reagan Administration and the media had Reagan and Romney out there virtually to taking on the role of action hero. Here was this former B movie actor, who had played the bumbling sidekick, who had been a character actor in some of the dumbest movies ever made, who was destined to be a footnote in the history books who was suddenly cast as an action hero. How did that happen? The key in the movie is that the whole thing is phony. It's all a smokescreen for what really happens. These two characters succeed in their mission and as they do they make it very clear that the real cannonball run is going to be led by the Russians.Everything looks good as Reagan and Romney hit the road, but in the final sequence the smoke that was used to make the Russians look evil is blown off and the entire operation is exposed. The movie ends with a shot of the flag flying on the moon and the screen going black as the movie is about to end. And in just a few short years we had the Democrats in office. The Reagan Administration and the media's propaganda campaign was exposed, yet it lasted until Reagan was out of office.
There are two things I love about the Cannonball Run films. The first is their lack of anything remotely resembling a story. You just don't care because it's all about getting from point A to point B as fast as you can. The second is that you can tell that there was a lot of freedom being given to the actors. They could act any way they felt like it which doesn't happen often at the movies anymore. They had fun with it too, which I know is what they wanted. This is classic comedic film making at its best. It's like watching a random snapshot of all the members of a gang on a wild weekend that was captured on film. And that's why it's a film I like to watch over and over again.
The easy answer is that it is a sequel to the Resident Evil series. This is technically true, but I'd say that it is an extension of the Resident Evil series. Resident Evil 2 started from scratch. You had no idea who these characters were and you were introduced to them. This game, however, takes place right after Resident Evil 1. 827ec27edc
