Alternatively, you can do this with the gcc compiler. The -m32 flag tells gcc to use a 32-bit compiler (any version of the 32-bit gcc compiler that's installed on your system) to compile the object file, and the -m32=-fPIC flag tells gcc to use a 32-bit compiler and build the resulting object file in such a way that it can be linked into a 32-bit executable.
NetCDF files are typically stored in a nc-file (except for binary files). The library supports reading these nc-files with ncopen, and writing them with ncstore. This support for nc-files is provided by the netcdf4 package.
The Unix/Linux command-line options are:
configure -i for debugging only (no optimization, no link)
configure -release to compile a release of the library
configure -debug to compile a debug of the library
configure -m32 to compile a 64-bit library
@larry: Thanks a lot for your reply. I tried your suggestion, the program was able to start the process but then got stuck at the point where the process actually started. I followed the process as you had suggested and I got the following error: Setup failed. Please install 32 bit java and update alternatives links using update-alternatives command. For more details, refer KB article KB25239.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
