It used to be that the previous versions of Internet Explorer had problems with activeX controls and Active Scripting. Since the activeX controls that were built into the previous version of Internet Explorer have not gotten updates for security reasons, older software cannot use the new controls towards the new version of Internet Explorer. Active Scripting, the way that Internet Explorer parsed scripts, is often in conflict with other programs. On many websites and in many cases, Active Scripting is prevented so that older software cannot function. Older software will work with newer version of Internet Explorer, but not the other way around.
